Welcome to Bear Motorsport.
Adam, commonly known as 'Bear' is an enthusiast of the Mazda Familia. His passion for these cars has found him currently competing in the Victorian Hillclimb Championship with his red Familia GTR.
We are in Victoria, a state in southern Australia, and while there are a number of us with Familias in close vicinity, they are a very rare car in this part of the world. We have our own un-official club going on where i think the current count would be about 10 Familia GTRs or GTXs that have regular meetings. Bear with his unbridled enthusiasm for these cars is the binding force for our club. And so the birth of Bear Motorsport.
While working on a Familia GTR can be challenging due to it's rarity, Bear's advantage is having daily contact with any of 7 Mazda Familias. The overall parts accumulation, ongoing comparisons and different modifications and problems create a wealth of information and even more general dribble about the GTR every day. Obviously the other talking point is the regular stories from everyone about who they chopped up on the roads today. We do not condone dangerous driving, but any enthusiast knows that cars are meant to be enjoyed.
So where did it begin.....
The Nissan Pulsar ET Turbo i think. This front wheel drive 1.5L sparked the turbo bug in many of us. Bear went through a couple of these cars doing his turbo apprenticeship before purchasing an imported grey Maxda Familia '89 model. It was 4WD Turbo, but it's body shape was just a bit earlier than the standard GTX.
The grey beast became a real weapon, but it was time to look to bigger and better things. I had been also driving a Pulsar ET for a while now and one day Bear shows me this car. A white Familia GTR. The timing was right for me, and the pulsar got traded. Best decision i ever made, have known i would never sell her from the first day. After a short time of playing with mine, Bear sourced his own Red 'Betty' as she is affectionately known.Lukey also got a white Familia GTR around the same time and the Familia Club was formed.
